COMENTARIU CRITIC


(...) Lucrarile hipermedia ale lui Calin Man intra in corespondenta cu cele ale lui Talan Memmott, Jason Nelson, J.R. Carpenter sau Mary-Ann Breeze. Precum acesti artisti, Calin Man este si el interesat de expresivitatea artistica a codului calculatorului. Artistul imbina teoria si fictiunea, scrierea verbala cu iconul si grafica, tehnologia digitala cu arta vizuala si literatura. La prima vedere, mizeaza pe jocul lingvistic care incruciseaza engleza cu jargonul cibernetic si cu aluziile culturale, identitatea locala, dar si cultura umanista cu tehnocultura. Lucrarile sale interactive se genereaza in prezenta privitorului. Astfel, in cadrul aceleiasi ferestre se suprapun etaje diverse ale tipograficului si ale iconicului in timp ce cursorul este miscat sau link-ul este activat. Lucrarile se dezvaluie pe masura ce componentele lor se exfoliaza sau se perspectiveaza, se dilata sau se adincesc, creind vertije de sens. Privitorul acceseaza o componenta a unei opere, in acelasi timp in care ecranul contine toate celelalte componente, fie dezvelite, fie ascunse.
 
Creator de concepte fabuloase si situatii artistice spumoase (K.A.F.K.A sau Kinetik Area for Kitchen Art sau PataPhysika du Fish), artistul dezvolta scenarii narative si desfasoara spatii vizuale sintetice, transformind algoritmul si calatoria in citeva dintre topos-urile frecventate. Pornind de la „biografemul zadarnic“, o istorie biografica fictionala, si de la teritoriul aradean metamorfozat in spatiu fantastic, Calin Man asociaza interactivitatea lucrarii de arta cu elementul pluralului si al aleatoriului, pixelul cu antipixelul si materia cu antimateria. Paradoxul lui Zenon din Elea, filozofia lui John Locke, fizica lui Heisenberg si Planck sau literatura lui Joyce si Jarry sint citeva dintre modelele culturale transformate in limbajul codului calculatorului. Spre exemplu, in PataPhysica du Fish, opera ce face parte din arhiva Revoltaire, personajele nu au o biografie spectaculoasa, ci dimpotriva, numele lor intra in galeria caracterelor insipide, cu o existenta banala. Golden Virus (CD-Rom&Internet) trateaza tema panicii care a marcat anul 2000: virusul Y2K si eclipsa totala de soare. Teama, distopiile si tonurile apocaliptice manifestate cu aceste prilejuri sint ironizate de artist, in acelasi timp in care relatia centru-periferie este atinsa prin problematizarea fenomenului de globalizare.

    Studii academice:
    1982-1987 – Universitatea Timisoara, Facultatea de Litere;

    Activitate profesională:
    Din 1978 – membru al grupului Kinema Ikon.
    Din 1985 lucreaza ca fotograf și curator la Muzeul de Artă Arad.
    1990-1993 Editor si designer al revistei Conversatia.
    1993- prezent - Intermedia (din 1993 pina in prezent).

    Realizează proiecte de fotografie, acțiuni/performance, instalații foto și video, lucrări multimedia interactive on-line și off-line, publică texte de autor, colaborează la spectacole experimentale de poezie.
