CRITICAL REVIEW


          He represents an important name of the ’80s generation, active at that time in Atelier 35. He was trained as a ceramist, but he also approached during his career multiple types of artistic expression: painting, drawing, photography, instalment, performance. Besides his artistic activity one can add the one as a professor and as a dean in the University of Arts and Design from Cluj-Napoca.His predilection for experimentalist-like searches is doubled by a permanent referencing to the shapes and the aesthetical archetypal values. In Titu Toncian’s works can be found an orientation towards the plastic research of fundamental and profound things, configured in the shape of plastic metaphors. Such a conception of the artistic act brings with it the necessity of the perpetual return, with rigor and method, to the major themes of creation. The Compositions T series is proof of this fact. The objects imagined and transposed into ceramic matter become civilizational artefacts, valued by the artist in the most suitable forms of transmitting symbolically charged messages. Stratifications alludes to the practice of archaeology as a revelatory activity for the hidden messages of history. Furthermore, one of the constants of his creation is linked to condensing in the work the feeling of discovery, of knowledge through accessing the cultural heritage. In this category can also be integrated the series that uses the motif of the book, the tomes, of writing (The Wall of Books, Burnt Genealogies, T Writing). The Memory of the Place concentrates upon the motif of the human body. The installation consists of anthropomorphic clay figures, flattened and stylized, completed by luminous contours realized using some neon tubes. The proposed discourse is based on the double perspective of human nature: the fragile body, in a state of degradation, disintegration, opposed to the bright aura that is the spirit. The complexity of Titu Toncian’s artistic approach consists, on one side, of the problem-solving that he formulates, of the means of relating to spirituality, and on the other side, in the flexibility of the plastic solutions and in the techniques used.
