CHIPĂRUȘ, Dimitrie (Dumitru)

CRITICAL REVIEW

He debuts with an academic sculpture that nevertheless captures the intensely human dimension of his characters. Probably under the influence of the fin-de siècle ideas, Chipăruş chooses a series of subjects with a highly dramatic potential which will give him the opportunity to display his admirable portraitist qualities. By a few reproductions we know some of his early works: a study of expression, several portraits and two impressive compositions – Together (the dantesque episode of Ugolino) and The triumph of the Vice. Beginning from 1920 he dedicates himself to decorative art: he makes a series of statuettes using the chryselefantine technique, phase which will overshadow his previous works and will ensure him certain notoriety in the Art Deco context. A similar technique, originated in the Antiquity had been used by the German sculptor Max Klinger at the end of the 19th century.
